New To Makeup? Start Here!

Updated: May 15, 2023

Makeup can seem confusing, overwhelming, and frustrating. But I'm here to tell you --- it doesn't have to be! And if fact I will make it way easier than you ever thought possible.

Have you ever said the phrase "I'm so bad at makeup" or "I suck at it so I don't even try." These are the top 2 things I hear when someone tells me they want to learn makeup but they just feel like they don't know where to start.

And I get it, starting out with makeup can be overwhelming, especially if you're new to the world of beauty. With so many products and techniques out there, it can be hard to know where to begin. But that's why I'm here! In this post, I'll share the exact steps you need to do to learn makeup for the first time.

Tip #1 - Start With The Fundamentals "The 3 T's"

The 3 T's are what I call the fundamentals to makeup and are crucial for doing pro-worthy looks.

They are as follows:

Skin tone - Your undertone (cool, warm, olive, neutral)

Skin type - Your skin type (dry, oily, combo)

Skin texture - Your skin texture (acne, rosacea, melasma, dark spots, fine lines)

Not knowing this can leave you confused and shopping for all the wrong products and using the wrong techniques. When you have this down, you'll have a clear roadmap of where you need to go and what you need to do get there! Need help finding your 3 T's? Tip #2 - Invest In The Right Tools + Brushes

Having the right tools and brushes is just as important as having the right products. You don't need the most expensive tools either! Elf has some amazing brushes for a fraction of the cost and they work just as amazing as the higher end brands. And in fact, you don't need a ton of brushes either. I suggest no more than 10 so you're not overwhelmed with choices.

Tip #3 - Be Picky With Tutorials

YouTube tutorials are great but you have to make sure you're spending your time and attention to a pro that's actually going to help you with what you need. A pro that has extensive knowledge in all skin tones, types, and textures (the 3T's!)

Most gurus or influencers have knowledge on THEIR own style, but they don't know what's going to work well on other people. So take for example, a young YouTuber who loves to do makeup but she's only demonstrating makeup tips for women under 20. That doesn't help you if you don't fit that demographic, and in fact, can make your makeup look worse since makeup is done differently throughout different ages.

The bottom line is to learn from a makeup pro who has been there and done that many times over!

Tip #4 - Practice, Practice, Practice

I used to be a teacher and one of the things we're taught in college is not only how to teach, but how to make sure our student is practicing well enough so that they don't forget everything they've just learned. It's great and fun to learn something new, but if you don't practice it enough you can unfortunately waste the time you took to learn it, by not putting it in action.

I suggest learning ONE new makeup tip/technique a week and practicing it everyday. If you make mistakes -- that's okay! As long as you have guidance and a coach to give you feedback, you'll get better. And after all, true transformation comes from compounding small tasks daily.

Tip #5 - Take Care Of Your Skin

Your final tip is taking good care of your skin. The foundation of everything. Most people skip this step because it's usually the most confusing. And I get it, there are a LOT of different chemicals in skincare and it's hard to figure out what works best without spending a lot of money and time researching.
